Military Sexual Trauma (for Providers)
April 4, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
The Pentagon estimates that nearly 20,000 service members are sexually assaulted each year. In addition, service members have experienced higher rates of prior sexual trauma than their civilian counterparts.
This 90-minute course is designed to assist mental health professionals and advocates with providing an effective, appropriate, and trauma-informed response to military service members, veterans, and family members who have experienced sexual assault as an adult or childhood sexual abuse. We will discuss the reality of sexual assault, including what causes this epidemic to occur. We will address the impact of sexual trauma on survivors, including additional barriers experienced by service members and their families. We will also look at trauma-informed ways to help survivors cope, recognize and manage triggers, and ultimately heal from this traumatic experience.
