In 2009, John La Bella opened Gallery Mortgage in the space of a former art gallery in Bloomington, Indiana, and the opportunity to do well by doing good was born. Outgrowing the original space in 2014, they moved to 121 E. 6th Street and purposefully included dedicated gallery space called “The Vault.”
With a focus on local artists, La Bella and his team have a unique approach that supports both the art community and helps make life better for young people in the community facing homelessness. As an Auxiliary Member of the Bloomington Gallery Walk, Gallery Mortgage donates The Vault’s gallery space, labor, expense, and artist receptions on First Fridays in exchange for the artist’s commitment to donate 25% of sales to Stepping Stones, a program of Centerstone.
John La Bella shared, “We support Stepping Stones and Centerstone because they provide housing and support services to at-risk youth who might otherwise be homeless and without stable shelter. Because our revenue comes from the sale of mortgages to individuals with stable housing circumstances, supporting Stepping Stones makes the most sense. We help at-risk youth with housing and support services with funds generated from a business that creates revenue from the housing industry.”
