Courage Beyond at Centerstone to Sponsor Performances of World War II Musical

“Ponder Anew” addresses post-traumatic stress; Will be presented at Nashville-area venues throughout May and June

Nashville, Tenn. – Courage Beyond at Centerstone is bringing together military families and the community throughout May and June to experience “Ponder Anew,” a musical set during World War II that is based on the memoirs of Lt. Herschel Ponder, who struggled with post-traumatic stress (PTS) following his military service. Courage Beyond is sponsoring these free admission Nashville-area performances of the musical to help communities understand PTS, a condition the organization assists service members, veterans and their families to overcome.

“He became a professional killing machine flying P-47 Thunderbolts,” said Lt. Ponder’s daughter, Carol Ponder, who created the musical production with her husband, Robert Kiefer. “When he came home three years later, he had to reintegrate into civilian life while struggling with PTS and other unseen wounds of war.”

Performances of “Ponder Anew” will feature talkbacks and workshops hosted by Courage Beyond personnel. These opportunities to share common experiences will assist service members, veterans and their families in healing and reintegration following military service.

“In the talkbacks after performances, we’ve discovered that seeing ‘Ponder Anew’ initiates a willingness in folks to talk about their own experiences,” said Ponder. “It is part of being human that when we begin to talk, we can begin to heal.”

Courage Beyond staff also will be able to connect military families attending the performances with local service providers and support resources.

“Courage Beyond is delighted to partner with Carol and Robert to host performances of ‘Ponder Anew’,” said Dr. Kimberly Gray, Chief Clinical Officer for Courage Beyond at Centerstone. “This is a great opportunity for communities to learn more about PTS and for military families to meet and talk with others who have had similar experiences. Those touched by the performance will be able to quickly and easily access help in dealing with their own struggles following military service through Courage Beyond.”

Courage Beyond is sponsoring seven “Ponder Anew” performances and two short performances of the musical followed by an interactive workshop. Admission is free and first come, first served except where noted. Parental guidance is suggested.
