Cohen Safe Space: A Place for All

Welcome to Cohen Safe Space, where everyone is valued and supported.

Here at Cohen Safe Space, we believe in creating an environment where everyone feels safe, supported, and heard. Our mission is to foster a community of inclusivity and respect.

Introducing Cohen Safe Space: A Place for All

Despite years of working towards intentional inclusivity, we have only begun to work to proactively build a virtual “Safe Space” where we can provide support to others, where we can learn, grow and wrestle with our understanding of the world around us, and where we can build on the resources and partnerships we have in the communities we serve.

Welcome to #CohenSafeSpace

We know that military families with LGBTQIA+ dependents face unique challenges (e.g., frequent moves, shifting social/political climate, etc.), which outlines a substantial need to increase our capacity to support these families. Research done by the Human Rights Campaign showed that 31% of LGBTQIA+ youth are bullied in school and face higher rates of violence. Sadly, this leads to more than half of LGBTQIA+ youth having symptoms of depression- and, all too often, an attempt to take their own life. And military-connected LGBTQIA+ youth are even more likely to report depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation than peers of non-military parents, according to the Trevor Project.

As a result, our Cohen Clinics at Centerstone are actively working to counteract the emotional burden of loneliness and hopelessness. Increasing a family’s capacity to provide support is key to reducing mental health symptoms in LGBTQ youth. Centerstone’s Cohen Clinics are behavioral health providers with dual competency in military culture and services for LGBTQIA+ youth and their families.

As we continue to grow the landscape of exceptional care we strive to provide, we are very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to extend care and treatment to a population very close to our hearts, the LGBTQIA+ community. We want to provide special emphasis around supporting our LGBTQIA+ youth alongside their caregivers as we look to grow and unify families. This care intersects specifically with our mission to care for the entire military family, meeting the unique needs of two very special populations. Our clinicians are equipped with the tools to competently meet the cultural needs of those who deserve emotional safety and- in an effort to support this growing need- a safe space where we can share information, support, and education.

We look forward to you joining us!
