Mythbusting the “Ideal Summer Body”

For many, summer is a favorite time of year filled with pool days, outdoor activities, and celebrations with loved ones. But for others, this season can bring feelings of anxiety, particularly around body image. Due to the warmer summer months, some people may wear more revealing clothing like shorts, tank tops, and swimsuits, which can heighten self-consciousness and amplify body-related stress. They may also feel more self-conscious in summer because of increased perspiration or other physical reactions to the heat. Summer can also change up our routines which can sometimes make it harder to stick to healthy eating and exercise habits. Also during this time, there may be an influx of social media activity showing people with the “ideal” body type which can be triggering for some.
Having the perception of needing to change our bodies for a certain season (and in general to achieve the “ideal” figure) can be harmful to our mental health because it can perpetuate negative self-talk, unhealthy eating habits, and, for some people, a serious focus on appearance, also known as body dysmorphia.
Though this time of year can bring up a negative perception about one’s physical appearance, you can focus on the positive by appreciating your body for what it’s capable of doing. This includes appreciating the body’s functions, abilities, and ways it allows you to live your life. For example, being grateful that your body allows you to talk walks in the park, laugh with your friends, think, and breathe.
Building your body confidence can be hard to do, but here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind as you continue your self-love journey:
- Avoid comparing yourself to others.
- Be kind to yourself and challenge any negative self-talk.
- Practice self-care.
- Think healthy, not skinny: When you exercise or make meals for yourself, think of it as a way to show appreciation to your body for showing up each day rather than with goal weight in mind.
- Make note of everything you like about yourself.
- Focus on your whole self: You are so much more than how you look!
You may also find it helpful to reflect on what summer means to you personally; maybe it’s being outside, feeling the sun on your skin, or spending time with friends. Lean into those experiences and allow them to ground your perspective. Another helpful strategy is to curate your environment. While you can’t control everything around you, you can shape the content you consume daily. Unfollow or mute social media accounts that trigger body comparison or fixation, and instead follow those that promote wellness, joyful summer activities, and adventures unrelated to appearance. Choose to wear what makes you feel confident, and engage in activities that help you redirect your focus from your body image to things like watching live music, stargazing, or a late-night drive with a good playlist! These intentional choices can help cultivate a more joyful and free summer vibe.
