Supporting Women Veterans: Mental Health Resources That Matter

March is Women’s History Month—a time to honor the incredible contributions of women throughout history and to recognize the unique challenges they face today. For women veterans, mental health is one of those critical challenges, requiring specialized care and attention.

Understanding the Challenges

Women veterans are at a higher risk for mental health conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. Military sexual trauma (MST) is also a significant concern, with many women veterans reporting experiences of sexual harassment or assault during their service. Without proper care, these experiences can lead to long-term psychological effects.

Resources That Make a Difference

At the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Centerstone, we’re here to help. Our clinic offers mental health services designed specifically for women veterans, including:

  • Individual therapy
  • Couples therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Therapeutic services
  • Groups and workshops

All post-9/11 veterans and their family members are eligible for care—no matter their discharge status.

How You Can Help

Supporting women veterans on their mental health journey is essential. Here’s how you can make an impact:

  • Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the unique mental health challenges women veterans face and share this knowledge with your community. Awareness is the first step toward change.
  • Advocate for Specialized Services: Encourage local healthcare providers and clinics to offer services tailored to women veterans’ needs. Your voice can help ensure these essential services are available.
  • Volunteer Your Time: Organizations that support veterans rely on volunteers. Your time and effort can make a real difference in the lives of those who’ve served.
  • Offer Support: If you know a woman veteran, reach out. A simple conversation or gesture of support can mean more than you realize.
  • Donate: Financial contributions to organizations providing mental health services for women veterans help expand their reach and impact.

Let’s Make a Difference

This Women’s History Month, let’s honor the brave women who’ve served our country by ensuring they receive the mental health support they deserve. Together, we can raise awareness, advocate for specialized services, and help women veterans lead healthier, happier lives.
