What is TMS Therapy?
TMS therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation—think of it as physical therapy for the brain. These pulses help activate underactive areas that may be contributing to symptoms of depression or OCD.
Treatment is delivered while you sit comfortably in a chair. A small device is placed lightly against your head and delivers focused magnetic pulses to a specific part of your brain. You’re awake the entire time, there’s no sedation, and you can resume normal activities afterward.
TMS is typically done five days a week for four to six weeks. Each session lasts about 20 minutes. Many patients find the routine manageable and say it becomes a meaningful part of their day, especially with regular encouragement from their care team.
