Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a cognitive behavioral therapy for PTSD in which therapists help clients recognize and examine the thoughts getting in the way of trauma recovery (referred to as “stuck points”) using Socratic questioning and a progressive series of worksheets. CPT is a variable-length treatment that is typically about 12 sessions. CPT is one of the most widely studied treatments for PTSD and is recommended as a first line treatment in clinical practice guidelines.
