Connecting in the Community Room

The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Centerstone’s community room was a busy place last month. Nearly 100 people took advantage of the clinic’s February enrichment classes and organizers couldn’t be happier.

“Our community room was created to be a hub of social activity,” Julie Adams, Clinic Director, explained. “We want our military families to feel comfortable here, not just in our therapy offices, but out in the community rooms where we hope they strengthen family bonds, make friendships and maybe try something new.”

Last month the clinic’s community room hosted a Social Spark event in collaboration with MilSpouse designed to bring military spouses together, a couples painting class courtesy of Arts for Hearts, a marriage workshop in partnership with two local therapists, a gardening class from our friend Charley Jordan of Jordan Farms, and family movie night. Each of these offerings welcomed a number of new faces into the facility and served to make memories.

“It’s always special to see new families come to the clinic,” outreach director, Meghan Williams, said. “Often they arrive a bit apprehensive, or unsure of what to expect. By the time they walk back out the doors, they’re smiling and asking, ‘what’s next’? We love that.”

So what is next? Quite a bit! Arts for Hearts will be back this month for another creative class, Charley Jordan will return to exercise our green thumbs, First Command will help families with budgeting concerns, and the Cohen Clinic theater will open for family movie night on the 28th.

“We try to offer something for everyone,” Williams explained. “In fact, we encourage people to let us know what they’d like to see in the community room, too. If we can make it happen, we’ll certainly give it a try.”
