Finding Time for Self-Care in the Chaos of the Holidays

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness, but it can also be a whirlwind of activity. In the midst of the chaos, it can be easy to let your wellness routine slip through the cracks. However, prioritizing your physical and mental health during this busy season can help you stay energized, reduce stress, and allow you to truly enjoy the moments that matter.

Your wellness routine is always important, but especially so during the holiday season. This time of year can be stressful, lonely, or difficult for some people, so sticking to a schedule to make sure you stay happy and healthy is key. It is crucial to remember, however, that your routine may look a little different this time of year – and that’s okay! When it comes to honoring and setting boundaries to maintain your routine, remember what your priorities are, give yourself permission to say no, and make your routine work for you.

If maintaining a certain workout schedule is important to you, determine if there are ways to alter it to best fit this busy time of year. For example, if you aren’t able to fit both your workout and family time into the day, see if there is a way to combine the two. Maybe you take a walk as a family to go see holiday lights, play outside together in the snow, or stay inside and find a family-friendly workout video for all to enjoy. If you’re finding it hard to adhere to specific healthy eating habits this time of year, remember that balance is essential. While you may want to avoid over-indulging, there is also nothing wrong with enjoying some festive treats during the holiday season.

Brittany McCrady, Clinical Manager at Centerstone, recommends the following to help you stay on track with your physical and emotional well-being:

  • Check-in with yourself each day to determine how you’re feeling physically and emotionally.
  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed at social events, step away from the crowd into a quiet space to breathe and leave the event if you need to.
  • Mentally prepare yourself for the busy season in a way that makes the most sense for you.
  • Advanced planning and staying organized is key, so try to map out your daily or weekly schedule while giving yourself permission to remain flexible.
  • Evaluate your schedule to see if there is anything you can take off your plate.
  • Decline invites to different events and gatherings if they don’t align with your schedule or wellness priorities.

“While it may be challenging to find the time for self-care during the whirlwind of the holiday season, it’s always best to trust your gut to do what’s best for yourself,” says McCrady. Even though your routine may look different, it’s important to make sure that your health and happiness remains a priority.
