Harnessing the Power of the Brain: An Introduction to TMS

Thanks to ongoing education, information, and research, effective mental health treatments continue to emerge and become more widely accessible. One approach that is gaining increased use and providing positive impact is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
What is TMS?
Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2008, TMS is a non-invasive and safe treatment technique that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. “It offers a viable treatment option for patients with Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and nicotine dependence” says Vinita Watts, Chief Medical Officer at Centerstone. This treatment is approved for patients ages 15 and older who are experiencing depression and patients with OCD who are18 and older.
How does it work?
During treatment, an electromagnetic coil is placed on the scalp. The coil delivers magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in the region of the brain involved in mood control. Essentially, it is thought that this specific region is underactive in people with depression. While in treatment, the device pulses on that specific region of the brain and delivers a small electric current that helps reset dysfunctional brain patterns.
How long is treatment?
During the initial appointment, a psychiatrist will perform brain mapping which is used to identify which part of the brain will be optimal for treatment. Watts adds, “after this, treatments can last between three and twenty minutes five days a week for a total of between 30 and 35 sessions. Similarly to a round of antibiotics or physical therapy, it is crucial that all TMS treatments are completed for the best possible results.”
Are there any side effects?
In general, TMS is typically very well tolerated by most patients; however, some minor side effects may occur. The most common side effect is headache. Others include scalp sensations, facial tingling or twitching with TMS pulses. Though it is rare, some patients treated with TMS have experienced seizures.
