The Invisible String: A Group for Military Children

Military life brings unique challenges for children—frequent moves, deployments, and long separations from loved ones. But no matter the distance, our connections remain strong. That’s the heart of The Invisible String Military Child Group, a program designed to help military kids feel connected, supported, and understood.  This group is certainly built to support children with active duty parents, but we have benefitted from children impacted by military service at different stages and levels of connection as well. This group is open to any military-connected child, whether they are the child or grandchild of an active duty service member, a child or grandchild of a Veteran, or even a best friend or loved one of someone who has served in the military. We recognize that military life impacts not just immediate family members, but also those with strong personal connections to service members. No matter their connection to the military, every child in the group will find a space in this group where their experiences are understood, their feelings are validated, and their connections are honored and celebrated.

Why This Group Matters

Jacksonville is home to one of the largest military populations in the U.S., with thousands of children navigating the ups and downs of military life. Studies show that military kids are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges due to deployments and relocations. This group was created to provide a space where they can process these experiences, build friendships, and develop tools for emotional resilience.

The Power of the Invisible String

Inspired by The Invisible String by Patrice Karst, this group helps children visualize their unbreakable bonds with family, friends, and even those who have passed away. Whether a parent is deployed overseas or a child is adjusting to a new school after a relocation, The Invisible String reminds them that love and connection are always present.

What Happens in the Group?

Each session is designed to help military children recognize and strengthen their connections, even when loved ones are far away. Through hands-on activities, creative expression, and group discussions, children explore the idea that relationships can withstand distance and change. They engage in storytelling, art, and interactive games that make abstract concepts—like emotional bonds and resilience—feel tangible and real.

From creating visual representations of their connections to sharing personal stories and reflections, participants learn that they are never truly alone. Activities encourage them to express their feelings, celebrate their unique experiences, and build a sense of belonging with peers who understand their journey. By the end of the program, each child walks away with a deeper understanding of their support system and the reassurance that love, no matter the distance, is always present.

A Space for Growth and Connection

This group isn’t just about talking—it’s about experiencing connection. Through storytelling, creativity, and shared experiences, children leave feeling seen, supported, and empowered to navigate life’s changes with confidence. After the group, children and their parents have reported having stronger connections to each other and new connections to group members. We have also seen this group encourage members to strengthen connections to loved ones and friends that may be living farther away.
