Centerstone opens Springfield Youth Resiliency Campus
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Centerstone hosted a grand opening for its Youth Resiliency Campus in Springfield April 9. The 27,858-square foot building houses a youth behavioral health crisis center, an intensive outpatient treatment center and a youth residential treatment center for individuals ages 13-17.9.
“We want anyone who steps through those doors to know that this space was designed for them,” Centerstone Director of Youth Stabilization Services Joe Uhl said. “Our main goal is stabilization and reintegration into day-to-day life. This is the place where a youth and their family can figure out what’s next and take a step forward toward a brighter tomorrow.”
The campus is designed to provide care for youths in crisis, and houses a 20-bed residential treatment center, a partial hospitalization program and an intensive outpatient treatment program. The behavioral health crisis center will be open round-the-clock, every day of the year for clients at risk of harming themselves or another person. Crisis center clients are treated for up to 23 hours at a time. The campus features a gym, an art room, a music room and an outdoor recreation space.
“This space will serve as a sanctuary for youths facing a range of challenges, from acute mental health issues to substance use,” Missouri Market CEO at Centerstone Mat Gass said. “The YRC is a transformative project designed to provide youths emergency 24/7 behavioral health care and expanded residential care services, but also opportunities to address needs before they escalate to crisis levels. To offer all these services on one campus is truly remarkable, and it’s very exciting for our team members.”
YRC not possible without partnerships
The $13 million Youth Resiliency Campus construction is funded in part by a $5.3 million American Recovery Plan Act allocation from Greene County.
“We’re so excited about this innovative, forward-thinking model that will address gaps in services for youth experiencing mental health or substance use crisis across all of southwest Missouri,” Greene County Second District Commissioner John C. Russell said. “Today is more than a ribbon cutting, it is a statement that our community sees our youth, we hear them and we are committed to supporting them for a lifetime.”
Centerstone also received $5 million allocated for the residential treatment center in the Missouri state budget for 2025-2026 and $1 million from the Missouri Department of Mental Health.
“It’s a campus that has a reality of a $13 million investment, but more importantly represents a decision to do things differently, to intervene earlier, to make health accessible and to give young people a real shot at getting back on the right path,” Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe said at the ceremonial ribbon cutting April 9. “This is what it looks like when we focus on results, not talk.”
“A lot of people don’t realize this 28,000-square foot location was designed and built by our providers,” Uhl said. “Our facilities management team worked with our clinical team and our youth services team to come up with a building that will be welcoming, safe and bright.”
Uhl explained behavioral health crisis center will serve individuals ages 12-18 and will provide immediate stabilization care.
“We have the ability to reduce the number of acute hospitalizations for our clients, and hopefully within that 23-hour period, work to calm and resolve issues and send the client and guardian out with a treatment plan they can use to return home, learn and grow,” Uhl said.
