Celebrating Centerstone, honoring the Burrell legacy
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Burrell Behavioral Health is now Centerstone, but the mental health care provider’s flagship campus in Springfield will still bear the Burrell name.
Team members celebrated the renamed Centerstone Burrell Campus on Oct. 16, kicking off a week of festivities around the Dennis Sheppard Path at Schaible Lake Park through a partnership with Better Block SGF. Better Block SGF is a Springfield-based nonprofit focused on creating more vibrant, connected, and welcoming places through placemaking.
Burrell Behavioral Health began in 1977 as a small practice in downtown Springfield and grew into something much larger. It was funded in part through a grant from the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
“Fifty years ago, Burrell was unapologetic about bringing behavioral health services to a community that needed it, and it was committed to doing that in a way that was different than other organizations,” Centerstone’s Market CEO for Missouri Mat Gass said.
Greene County Judge Don E. Burrell was instrumental in helping to launch the organization that bore his name — a name which lives on with Centerstone’s Burrell Campus on the south end of Springfield’s Medical Mile. Burrell served on the Missouri Mental Health Commission.
Dr. Wanda Holloway, PsyD, LPC, LCSW, CRAADC, is a clinical provider supervisor who has worked for Burrell Behavioral Health for more than 38 years. She has been involved in more than 150 psychiatric and counseling programs in her career. On Oct. 16, she relayed a story of receiving direct encouragement from Judge Burrell as a young clinician.
“He sat on the bench very frustrated that he could send people to jail but not to treatment,” Holloway said. “This place became his answer. I saw Judge Burrell on numerous occasions, and he always shared stories of lives being transformed.”
Team members, patients, families, partners and communities have shaped Burrell Behavioral Health’s legacy of growth by believing in its mission of delivering quality care that changes lives. Burrell Behavioral Health merged into Centerstone in 2025, and completed its rebranding effort in southwest Missouri in the fall of 2026.
“Founders don’t always understand the importance of a single moment and an opportunity to bring the future forward,” Gass said. “We’re moving to Centerstone, and being Centerstone allows us to deeply invest in our staff.”

Centerstone clinicians are part of a network of community mental health centers with more than 11,000 team members and more than 250,000 patients served every year.
Dr. Todd Schaible was the first executive director, then CEO of Burrell Behavioral Health. Schaible Lake Park is named in his honor. In the 1970s and ’80s, Schaible advocated for the integration of mental health care and medical health care.
“Dr. Schaible was a true visionary; he was a kind, gentle man and a strong leader and advocate for those in need of mental health services,” Holloway said.
