Teaming Up for Military Families

Veteran service organizations from across the state joined forces to ensure area veterans know they are here to serve them.

The Northeast Florida Community Veterans Engagement Board (CVEB) hosted its second annual Vet TalkX virtual event this month. The informational series aims to educate veterans and their families on resources available to them and where they may find support within their community.

“We want all our veterans and family members to know that we are passionate about supporting them,” Elizabeth Sherr, clinic director of the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Centerstone said. “We not only offer traditional therapy in their time of need, but we can provide case management help as well aimed at identifying other needs families may have and providing them with resources that can help fulfill those needs.”

In 2017, the Veterans Administration created the Vet TalkX program to provide a platform to help communities learn more about Veterans and services available to them.  The initiative provides a “TED Talk” like platform and these events have been held in over 30 locations across America and seen by over 50,000 viewers.

This year’s program was hosted by the Wounded Warrior Project at their headquarters with a focus on informing area Veterans of the support available through multiple organizations with a variety of services.  In addition to the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Centerstone, Northeast Florida Women Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America, K9s for Warriors, the City of Jacksonville and other prominent organizations provided an overview of their services.

“When in the service our service men and women and their families know they have a team surrounding them. It’s a community really,” Brigadier General (ret) Michael Fleming, outreach director at the Cohen Clinic at Centerstone said. “We hope to show our military families we are all here to be that team when they are out of uniform. You can never have too many resources ready to serve those who gave so much.”
